VPN Checker: Is My VPN Working?

VPN checker

Is my VPN working? This VPN checker answers that in a few seconds. It shows the IP address websites see, who owns it and where it is, then tells you whether that IP belongs to a VPN. It also checks for an IPv6 address leaking past your VPN.

How this VPN check works

Every website sees your IP address. When your VPN is off, that IP belongs to your internet provider, like Comcast, Verizon or BT, and shows roughly where you live. When your VPN is on, the IP belongs to your VPN provider and shows the location of the VPN server.

This tool looks up the network that owns your IP. If it is a VPN, proxy or hosting network, you are using a VPN. If it is a home or mobile provider, you are not.

How to check if your VPN is working

  • Turn your VPN off and load this page. Write down the IP and provider.
  • Turn your VPN on and connect to a server in another country.
  • Reload this page. The IP, provider and country should all be different.
  • Run the full VPN leak test to check for WebRTC and IPv6 leaks too.

Am I using a VPN right now?

Look at the VPN status card above. “VPN or proxy detected” means your traffic goes through a VPN or proxy. “No VPN detected” means websites see your real connection. If you expected a VPN, open your VPN app and check it says connected.

How to check your VPN on iPhone

Open this page in Safari with your VPN connected. You can also open Settings > VPN (or Settings > General > VPN & Device Management) and check the status says Connected. Our iPhone guide has the full steps.

Why your VPN might not be working

  • The VPN is connected, but this app is excluded. Split tunneling can send some apps outside the VPN.
  • You use a browser extension. It only protects the browser it is installed in.
  • The connection dropped. Without a kill switch, your device falls back to your normal connection.
  • IPv6 is not tunneled. Your IPv4 address is hidden but your IPv6 address is not.

FAQ

What is my IP address with a VPN?

It is the IP of the VPN server you are connected to. The test above shows it at the top.

Can this checker tell which VPN I use?

Sometimes. The provider name above is the network that owns the IP. Some VPNs own their networks, while others rent servers from hosting companies, so the name may be a hosting company instead of the VPN brand.

Is a VPN check the same as a leak test?

No. A VPN check tells you whether the VPN is on. A leak test also checks whether your real IP escapes through WebRTC, IPv6 or DNS.
