Here is how to check that your VPN is on and working on an iPhone.
1. Check the VPN status in Settings
- Open Settings. When a VPN is connected you see a VPN switch near the top, and a VPN icon in the status bar.
- For more detail, open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN. The status should say Connected.
2. Check your IP in Safari
- Turn the VPN off and open our VPN checker in Safari. Note your IP and provider.
- Turn the VPN on and reload the page.
- Your IP, provider and location should change, and the VPN status card should say “VPN or proxy detected”.
3. Run a full leak test
Open the VPN leak test to check your IPv6 and WebRTC addresses too. Mobile networks often give you IPv6, so this check matters on cellular data.
4. Turn on “Connect On Demand”
Most VPN apps can reconnect automatically. Look for Connect On Demand in the VPN’s settings, or an option in the VPN app, so you are not left unprotected after switching networks.
iCloud Private Relay is not a VPN
If you use iCloud Private Relay, the checker may show an Apple partner network. Private Relay only covers Safari and some app traffic, not your whole phone.
