This policy explains what information VPN Leak Checker (“we”, “us”) handles when you visit vpnleakchecker.com and use our tests, and what we do with it. We built the site to collect as little as possible.

The short version

  • We do not ask for your name or email to use the tests, and you do not need an account.
  • Our tests read information your browser already sends to every website, such as your IP address.
  • We do not sell your data, and we do not keep a history of your test results.
  • Some short-lived data is stored for a limited time to make the tests work and to prevent abuse, as explained below.

Information our tests use

IP addresses. To show you your IP address, our server reads the address your connection uses. Your browser also asks ipify.org for your IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. To show which network owns an address and roughly which country it is in, we look it up with IPinfo (ipinfo.io). If that lookup fails, your browser asks ipwho.is instead. We keep the lookup result for up to 24 hours so that repeated tests are fast.

WebRTC. The WebRTC and leak tests ask your browser to contact Google’s public STUN servers, which is how a website discovers the IP addresses WebRTC would reveal. The addresses are shown to you on the page.

Browser settings. The VPN detector reads your browser’s time zone and language settings to compare them with your IP location. This happens in your browser.

Speed test. The speed test sends random test data between your browser and our server. Your last few results are saved in your own browser (local storage) so that we can compare VPN on and off. They are not sent to us, and you can clear them by clearing your browser’s site data.

Torrent IP check. When you add our test torrent to your torrent client, the client contacts our tracker. We record the IP address, port and client name it reports, so that we can show them to you. This record is deleted automatically after 2 hours.

Abuse protection. To stop automated abuse, we count requests per IP address for one hour. We store a one-way hash of the IP address for this, not the address itself.

Server logs and hosting

Our website is hosted by Hostinger and delivered through its content delivery network. Like most web hosts, Hostinger keeps standard server logs, such as IP address, browser type, page requested and time, for security and troubleshooting. These logs are kept for a limited time under Hostinger’s own policies.

Cookies

Our tests do not use cookies. WordPress, the software the site runs on, may set cookies only for logged-in site administrators. If we add analytics or advertising in the future, we will update this policy and ask for consent where the law requires it.

Links to other websites

Some pages link to VPN providers and other websites, and some of these are affiliate links. When you follow a link, the other website’s privacy policy applies. An affiliate link may let that website know you came from us.

Contacting us

If you email us, we use your email address and message only to reply to you. We keep the conversation for as long as it is useful and then delete it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to ask us to correct or delete it, and to object to how we use it. Because we do not link test data to names or accounts, we usually hold nothing that identifies you. To make a request, contact us.

Children

Our website is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the site changes. The date at the top shows the latest version.
