About VPN Leak Checker

FreeNo sign-upRuns in your browser

VPN Leak Checker is a free set of tools that shows whether your VPN is doing its job. A VPN is only useful if it hides your real IP address everywhere, and many leak in ways that are hard to notice: through IPv6, WebRTC, a torrent client or a proxy that passes your address along. Our tests make those leaks visible in a few seconds.

What we do

  • Free tests with no sign-up. Every test runs in your browser. You do not need an account, an app or an extension.
  • Plain-language results. Each test tells you in one sentence whether you are protected, then shows the details for anyone who wants them.
  • Guides that fix the problem. When a test finds a leak, our guides explain how to stop it on your device.

Our tools

How our tests work

Our tests look at the same information every website receives when you visit it. We compare your public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, the addresses your browser reveals through WebRTC and any address a proxy forwards. We then look up which network owns each address. An address that belongs to a VPN or hosting company means your VPN is working. An address that belongs to a home or mobile internet provider while your VPN is on means a leak.

No test can be perfect. A small VPN or a residential VPN service may not be recognized as a VPN, and a business connection may look like a hosting network. When a result surprises you, run the test with your VPN off and on and compare the two.

Independence and how we make money

VPN Leak Checker is independent and is not owned by any VPN provider. The tests are free to use. Some pages link to VPN services, and we may earn a commission if you buy through those links. This never changes a test result: the tests show the same thing whichever VPN you use. Read our disclaimer for details.
